The only cause of the Korean War was the invasion of South Korea by North Korea. Japan annexed the Korean peninsula in the early 1910s. When World War 2 ended, American and British forces set up a pro-Western country in the southern part of the peninsula and the Soviet Union set up a Communist government in the north. The war, then, was an attempt to use force to unify the entire peninsula under Communist rule. The effects? Well, the Korean War is still technically being fought and our forces in Korea have received combat pay since the cease fire was signed in 1953. The United States lost over 38,000 troops in Korea. The war brought about some nuclear sensibilities when MacArthur suggested using nuclear weapons against Chinese troops and Washington rejected the idea (up until then, the U.S. basis of tactical defense was battlefield nukes which could be delivered by plane or by artillery shells. The Korean War made us realize this was not an acceptable option as good as it could sound on paper.) It solidified the political policy known as containment, which would lead us to Vietnam later. South Korea has rebounded to become an economic giant. North Korea has been mismanaged into an economic wasteland.

The three causes might best be described as Stalin, Mao, and Kim Il-sung. After the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, the Russians released previously secret documents that showed that the Korean War was 100% planned by those three, and was in no respects a response to provocations from the South, unlike the nonsense bandied about by historians like Bruce Cummings in the 1980s. A good book to read about the Korean War is "Mao" by Jung Chang. Mao's interest in the war was that he hoped that Stalin would remake China into a great military power if China got locked into a war with the Americans. He underestimated the difficulties of both the war and the remaking of China. Kim Il-sung was installed by the Soviets as North Korea's leader. He imagined that the war would be easier than it actually was. He didn't have much choice in the matter, but he probably was such an enthusiast for the war that he did not need to be ordered. Stalin alone really knew what he was doing.
