There is also Darwin's theory of natural selection, or 'survival of the fittest' which might be more helpful for answering this specific question.

Another example could be how hard it is to find sprays that kill roaches. This is because when exposed to the chemical, many die. The few that were immune due to variation in DNA would go on and reproduce and those generations would be immune to chemical spray their parent was exposed to.

The "survival of the fittest" idea originated from Herbert Spencer, a biologist. Darwin merely used his quote to emphasize the idea of evolution in his theory. This idea not only changed the world of science but the American Society as well through the spread of social Darwinism. The rich felt "survival of the fittest" was more of a battle of being rich to be rich rather than being poor. This lead to foundations even Rockefeller was inspired by.
