Could someone please give me a little bit of criticism on my essay please? Thanks.
“Et tu, Bruté? —Then fall, Caesar.” Those were the last words of Julius Caesar in the famous play by Willian Shakespeare. It means, “You too, Brutus?” Julius says this because he cannot believe that Brutus, someone he believed was a true friend, would be a part of the people who were stabbing him; supposedly so “Th' eternal devil to keep his state in Rome as easily as a king.” So they all did it to protect Rome, right? Not. Brutus is a patriot because he truly believed that he was killing Julius Caesar for the sake of Rome and its citizens. This matters because Brutus is a complex character and not many people can decide whether he is a patriot or betrayer. However, some may disagree with me because Brutus was a hypocrite and even if Cassius manipulated him, he shouldn’t have listened because Caesar was a friend. As I said before, Brutus is a complicated character in this play, but if you observe carefully, you will see he was just a person who was manipulated, who thought he was protecting what was more important and made senseless choices. Many believe that Brutus killed Julius Caesar because he was envious of the power that Julius Caesar had and the crown they were going to offer him. Brutus was not envious of Julius Caesar’s power until Cassius manipulated him into thinking that Caesar would have too much power if her were to be king. “Why, man, he doth bestride the narrow world like a Colossus, and we petty men walk under his huge legs and peep about to find ourselves dishonorable graves. Men at some time are masters of their fates. The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves, that we are underlings. Brutus and Caesar—what should be in that “Caesar”? Why should that name be sounded more than yours?” That is just part of what Cassius used to manipulate Brutus into thinking that Caesar was not the right leader for Rome. Many also say that even though Brutus was manipulated, he never realized the wrong that he did. But that is wrong because during the end of the play, he saw the ghost of Julius Caesar and he realized the wrong that he did. “Caesar, now be still. I killed not thee with half so good a will.” Said Brutus, as he died. Brutus was a patriot because he truly did believe that he was trying to make Rome a better place. Problem is, he was manipulated by Cassius. Many don’t know that manipulation is sometimes has a worse effect than physical abuse, because manipulation is emotional abuse. And as almost every psychological manipulation, Cassius tried to make it seem as if Brutus was going to do good. Cassius made it seem as if Caesar was the bad guy and that Caesar was going to make all of the citizens of Rome slaves. The manipulation caused Brutus to have bad judgment and lack the wisdom he may have had. It also made him think he was So there you have it. Brutus was a patriot. Many people think of Brutus as a betrayer, but they forget to remember the beginning of the play Cassius is who made Brutus look like a betrayer throughout the play and block Brutus’ mind into considering other options to make sure Romans wouldn’t become “slaves.” Brutus was brave and had good intentions, and more people should see that.
