Find the LCD of each, then add the numerators.
OpenStudy (horsegirl27):
LCD is the least common denominator, which means the smallest number that 3, 9, and 8 go into.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
1
OpenStudy (horsegirl27):
no, the one that they can all be multiplied into
OpenStudy (horsegirl27):
like 3 and 9 go into 9 evenly, but 8 cannot. So what number can they all go into?

please help me
OpenStudy (horsegirl27):
what number can they be multiplied into? Not divided but muliplied
OpenStudy (anonymous):
2
OpenStudy (horsegirl27):
no can you multiply 8 by something to get 2? Think of reasonable answers

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):
it will be a large number
OpenStudy (anonymous):
2 and 4
OpenStudy (horsegirl27):
no. 72.
OpenStudy (horsegirl27):
9, 8, and 3 all go into it
OpenStudy (horsegirl27):
so now your fractions will be 2/72, 5/72, 7/72

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):
add 2, 5, and 7 now
OpenStudy (horsegirl27):
and leave 72. What do you get
OpenStudy (anonymous):
ohh ok
OpenStudy (anonymous):
yes i understand
OpenStudy (horsegirl27):
so 14/72 understand? Do you see what I did?

good
OpenStudy (anonymous):
yes
OpenStudy (horsegirl27):
you don't always just multiply sometimes there are more steps to finding the LCD
OpenStudy (horsegirl27):
but in this case, it worked
OpenStudy (horsegirl27):
Ok and then 1 more step

OpenStudy (horsegirl27):
^_^ thanks ^_^
OpenStudy (horsegirl27):
I told u!
OpenStudy (horsegirl27):
14/72
OpenStudy (anonymous):
can you reduce this

Can you? you find out
OpenStudy (anonymous):
doesn't your numerator have to change when you change the denominator example if you change the denominator on 5/9 to 72 you have to multiply the numerator by 8 so it would be 40/72
OpenStudy (anonymous):
7/36
OpenStudy (horsegirl27):
I don't think so...
OpenStudy (horsegirl27):
yes

about 7/36 yes
OpenStudy (horsegirl27):
I know who we can ask
OpenStudy (horsegirl27):
Our best friend, and great supporter, Google
OpenStudy (anonymous):
are you checking because i don't think you can leave the numerator as they were the fraction 1/2 changed to say a denominator of 4 you would have to change the numerator to 2 so 2/4 when reduced back would be 1/2
OpenStudy (horsegirl27):
I agree you might be right

@harz360 you choose which one you want. Though I am leaning toward what @Lcb2516 said
OpenStudy (anonymous):
so is that answer wrong?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
I think so so whatever you do to the denominator you have to also do to the numerator so to change 5/9 to a denominator of 72 (8 times 9 =72) you have to multiply 8 times 5 so fraction would be 40/72 which then could reduce back to original 5/9
OpenStudy (anonymous):
@pooja can you verify that this is correct
OpenStudy (anonymous):
let me see if someone else will check this out for you

OpenStudy (anonymous):
so the answer is 5/9
OpenStudy (anonymous):
okay
OpenStudy (anonymous):
whatever you multiply the denominator by you have to multiply the numerator by as well
OpenStudy (anonymous):
so what would be the answer?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
take the first fraction 2/3 what do you need to multiply 3 by to get the lcd of 72?

OpenStudy (anonymous):
48/72 + 40/72 + 49/72 = ?/72 add the numerators what do u get? Do you have multiple choice answers
OpenStudy (anonymous):
48 + 40 + 49 = ?/72
OpenStudy (anonymous):
then simplify your fraction by dividing the numerator by the denominator 72 and that should be the answer
OpenStudy (anonymous):
137/72
OpenStudy (anonymous):
yes then 137 divided by 72 to get whole number and fraction

are there answer choices
OpenStudy (anonymous):
1 9/72
OpenStudy (anonymous):
I think to change it to a mixed fraction it would be 1 65/72 thats why I asked did you have multiple choice because i was trying to figure out how they want the answer expressed when you divide get a decimal so if you take 137 -72 =65 so the 72/72 makes a whole 1 and remainder is 65/72 which can't be reduced any further so I think after all this the answer is 1 65/72
OpenStudy (anonymous):
trying to explain to change an improper fraction to a proper fraction you think how many 72s there are in 137 that gives you your whole number and the remainder 65 is your fraction over the same denominator of 72
