What are 3 ways you can improve your reading by using context clues and understanding connotations?

OpenStudy (nottim):

Uh....I can only speedread....But I think maybe you're looking for understanding in different language? If so, look for words that are key to the sentence... Alsom in terms of connotation, think of the relationship of words in cultures. For example, Home means something comfortable, safe. Terrorist would mean the exact opposite by that standrd.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can I please just get my 3 ways?

OpenStudy (nottim):

For context clues, I guess, for example if there is a difficult term, such as Lepidoptera, you would look for surrounding words in the sentence taht would help define it.

OpenStudy (nottim):

What do you think are 3 ways?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you can probably use a dictionary.right?

OpenStudy (nottim):

Well, I think the question was asking specifically from the standalone text.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is that one of the ways?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do u mean by standalone text?

OpenStudy (nottim):

I did try to define it for you earlier. In fact, if you read closely, I already gave you 2 ways.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got the first way.whats the second way?couldn't I use a dictionary?

OpenStudy (nottim):

Define these 2 for me: context clues and understanding connotation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

context clues=word hints and connotation=meaning

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is that right?

OpenStudy (nottim):

Well, that's extremely simplifed there, but we can work off that. Connotation is IMPLIED meaning, and for context clues, its surrounding words that may help in understanding.

OpenStudy (nottim):

For example, if I said, "The fire-breathing, scaly long is here to eat us all" What is a long? Using the 'context clues' we can defer meaning.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the dragon

OpenStudy (nottim):

Yes! Long is the Chinese word for dragon.

OpenStudy (nottim):

That's one way.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so whats the second way?

OpenStudy (nottim):

For connotation, say I told you, "Welcome to our home". What does home imply?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

house

OpenStudy (nottim):

Er, using non-physical, metaphorical terms.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

welcoming the guests into the house.

OpenStudy (nottim):

And what emotion should that bring?

OpenStudy (nottim):

By saying that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

happiness

OpenStudy (nottim):

Yes. So in this case, 'home' and 'welcome' imply happiness.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the second way is by using feelings and emotional words?

OpenStudy (nottim):

Well, some words have 'deeper' meaning. If I said gun, what would that mean? Its dangerous.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah

OpenStudy (nottim):

So the second way would be, "Determining meaning by understanding how it is related to the sentence".

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok

OpenStudy (nottim):

For example, if I said, "He was pointing a gun at the rabbit", that would mean, "He is dangerous" and "rabbit is in danger".

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea

OpenStudy (nottim):

I can't think of another way though. I could only figure out 2 ways for you. Can you think of a thrid?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

using dictionary.com

OpenStudy (nottim):

To be honest, that is a way, but your question asks for: by using context clues and understanding connotations?

OpenStudy (nottim):

I think they want a combination of the 2 as the last answer, unless there's more to those definitions we figured out.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you can use the different types of connotations.

OpenStudy (nottim):

Multiple connotations of one word? That could work.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so is that the third one?

OpenStudy (nottim):

It is a third one, but I don't know if its the best one.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but can it work?

OpenStudy (nottim):

Yes, I guess.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok thank you for helping me to finish up this assignment.

OpenStudy (nottim):

To be honest, I'm not sure we came up with a good answer for the last one, but its been my pleasure. If you eve need help, call out.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thanks again.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hi sup???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hi

OpenStudy (anonymous):

remember me?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh yea

OpenStudy (arabpride):
