OpenStudy (mollykenney):

without graphing, determine whether the function represents exponential growth or decay. what is the y-intercept

OpenStudy (squirrels):

@dan815

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

Do you know anything about exponential growth/decay?

OpenStudy (mollykenney):

yes but i'm quite confused

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

Okay, so the standard form for an exponential growth function is \(\Large y= a(b)^x \) right?

OpenStudy (mollykenney):

if the number outside the parenthesis is larger then it's decay?

OpenStudy (mollykenney):

yes

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

Actually, for this, the A variable doesn't play a big role in determining growth/decay. It'll be "b" that determines it. If b is between 0 and 1, then it is decaying. If b> 1 then it is increasing.

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

Here's a good reference: http://www.regentsprep.org/regents/math/algebra/AE7/ExpDecayL.htm

OpenStudy (mollykenney):

1. growth 2. decay 3. decay

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

Yup, yup, and yup :)

OpenStudy (mollykenney):

and y intercept ??

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

That would be the functions A variable :P In the first few sentences if you need clarification: http://wmueller.com/precalculus/families/1_21.html

OpenStudy (mollykenney):

1. 0,2 2. 0,4 3. 0,3

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

Not sure if it needs to be in point form but yess

OpenStudy (mollykenney):

thank you so much @Luigi0210 !!
