OpenStudy (jokersmart):

Help? Which sentence has a pronoun with an unclear, missing, or confusing antecedent? A. Are you auditioning for a particular role in the play? B. I like going to this restaurant because you get a free appetizer with most orders. C. I'm surprised that you can chop raw onions without crying.

eclipsedstar (eclipsedstar):

Hi! Have any ideas so far? :)

OpenStudy (jokersmart):

Hey! ^^ I think possibly C?

eclipsedstar (eclipsedstar):

No, that's incorrect...

OpenStudy (jokersmart):

Err... B?

eclipsedstar (eclipsedstar):

"I like going to this restaurant because \(you\) get a free appetizer with most orders."

eclipsedstar (eclipsedstar):

Yes, B is the one! :D

eclipsedstar (eclipsedstar):

The "you" in that sentence is used wrong. :)

OpenStudy (jokersmart):

Ah, okay! Thanks for your help! :3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It is B. You change from "I" to "you" in the middle of a sentence.

eclipsedstar (eclipsedstar):

No problem! :)

OpenStudy (conqueror):

How is the 'you' wrong ? :P

OpenStudy (jokersmart):

Well, which one do you think it is?

OpenStudy (conqueror):

@EclipsedStar You're right about the sentence being wrong, but you're wrong about the word 'you' being wrong.

eclipsedstar (eclipsedstar):

Well my reasoning is that "you" should be replaced with "I".

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You change from talking about yourself to talking about someone else. In regards to antecedents, doing this makes the sentence wrong and confusing.

eclipsedstar (eclipsedstar):

I agree with @bisonbirdie17 :)

OpenStudy (conqueror):

It should be....I like going to this restaurant because you get a free appetizer with *more* orders.

eclipsedstar (eclipsedstar):

No...

OpenStudy (conqueror):

Well, the sentence was meant to have 'you' in it. The person stating that is not only talking about himself, but is talking about everyone who goes to the restaurant.

eclipsedstar (eclipsedstar):

"most" is in regards to "most orders can get a free appetizer", etc.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

http://prntscr.com/64bcxc

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That is incorrect. An antecedent, generally, goes off of the noun in the sentence. The "you" is supposed to be describing "I"...which is incorrect. The person IS only talking about himself. He/she is stating why they like that restaurant, not why everyone likes it.

eclipsedstar (eclipsedstar):

Then the "I" in that sentence should be changed to "They", that's what you're proposing @Conqueror :p

eclipsedstar (eclipsedstar):

"I" and "you" cannot be included in one sentence. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

At least not with the question at hand

eclipsedstar (eclipsedstar):

Yes. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Conqueror can you help me?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Glad we cleared that up :b

OpenStudy (conqueror):

>_> <_<

OpenStudy (conqueror):

I don't agree with that "logic"

OpenStudy (conqueror):

@King.Void.

OpenStudy (conqueror):

I'm a grammar police and I fight to death.

eclipsedstar (eclipsedstar):

Are you inquiring that Polices \(always\) fight to the death? o.O

OpenStudy (conqueror):

Yes.

OpenStudy (conqueror):

*Police Polices isn't a word, unless you mean policies

OpenStudy (conqueror):

Police is both singular and plural.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The "Grammar Police" guy does not know his Grammar. Also, I am sure that EclipsedStar simply made a typing error.

eclipsedstar (eclipsedstar):

Lol typo, Mr. Grammar.

OpenStudy (conqueror):

Thanks for the compliment, I didn't work especially hard to get this title. \(\huge\ddot\smile\) @bisonbirdie17

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You are wrong about this question. Do not flaunt your title if you can't prove you deserve it.
