OpenStudy (theedwardsfamily):

Anise ran 5 3/8 miles in the race. Marsha ran 37/8 miles. How much farther did Anise run than Marsha? Express your answer in simplest mixed-number form.

OpenStudy (nothingwasthesame):

1.5 miles

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Anise ran 5 and 3/8th miles in the race. Convert to an improper fraction, which you can do by (denominator * whole number) + numerator, while keeping the denominator the same. So we can say that 5 3/8 is equal to 43/8. Now 43/8 - 37/8 = 6/8 miles.

OpenStudy (holly00d1248):

subtract bigger number from smaller number

OpenStudy (holly00d1248):

or other way around i mean

OpenStudy (nothingwasthesame):

how you get well i'll tell you first its best to turn the fractions into decimals

OpenStudy (theedwardsfamily):

5 and 3/8 and 3 and 7/8

OpenStudy (nothingwasthesame):

so you must first get your calculater and put 3/8 the answer would be .375 and then you add 5 so that 5.375 then you work out 7/8 which if you simplify is .875 plus 3 so that 3.875 so then do 5.375 minus 3.875

OpenStudy (nothingwasthesame):

but were not done then answer would be 1.5 which then you can turn that back into a fraction

OpenStudy (theedwardsfamily):

I dont understand what you are saying about the decimals

OpenStudy (nothingwasthesame):

1 1/2

OpenStudy (nothingwasthesame):

ok so instead of making things take forever and doing it in fraction form simplify and turn inot decimal form then if your answer needs to be in fraction form after you have everything turn the answer into fraction form which is 1 1/2

OpenStudy (theedwardsfamily):

yeah

OpenStudy (nothingwasthesame):

you get it

OpenStudy (nothingwasthesame):

or 3/2 whichever you want there both the answer
