Determine if the function is a polynomial function. If the function is a polynomial function, state the degree and the leading coefficient. If the function is not a polynomial, state why.
OpenStudy (howard-wolowitz):
OpenStudy (howard-wolowitz):
This is a polynomial function of degree 12 with a leading coefficient of 2.
This is not a polynomial function as the factors are not all linear.
This is not a polynomial function because the leading coefficient is negative.
This is a polynomial function of degree 12 with a leading coefficient of -2.

HELP MEEEEEEEE
OpenStudy (anonymous):
ok what does the degree of a polynomial mean?

its the variable with the highest exponent on it.
OpenStudy (howard-wolowitz):
hey thxs for helping me
OpenStudy (anonymous):
It is a polynomial function

a
OpenStudy (anonymous):
you tell me, for the leading coefficient we would have (x)^3*(x^2)^2 * (-x^4)(2x)
OpenStudy (howard-wolowitz):
A then!
OpenStudy (anonymous):
whats (-1)(x^4)*2
OpenStudy (howard-wolowitz):
2

Hi phi!
OpenStudy (phi):
what have you figured out so far ?
OpenStudy (howard-wolowitz):
Well I am 99% sure its A
OpenStudy (howard-wolowitz):
I worked it all out and had some help

OpenStudy (howard-wolowitz):
I know that it has to be the highest coefficient
OpenStudy (phi):
it is definitely a polynomial
but its coefficient on the highest term is not 2
OpenStudy (howard-wolowitz):
oh well that other person siad it was so i was going off that.
OpenStudy (phi):
you can write (1-x^4) as -1 * (x^4 - 1)
and write the -1 "out front"
-1 * stuff
the stuff will be positive (because all the x's are +)
and then the -1 will make it negative.
OpenStudy (howard-wolowitz):
ok i gotcha

OpenStudy (phi):
you will always get 1*x (to some power) from all the terms except the (2x+1)
that will give you a 2
and the -1 we put out front will make it -2
OpenStudy (howard-wolowitz):
and thats what makes the leading term -2 right?
OpenStudy (phi):
yes.
OpenStudy (phi):
can you answer this now ?
OpenStudy (howard-wolowitz):
yes its D
