In her first five basketball games, Sarah scored 2, 5, 10, 15, and 18 points. What is the mean absolute deviation for this set of scores? [ ]points

@jwhite12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think that it is 10.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The mean is 10. But the mean absolute deviation is the mean of the distances of each number from that mean...confusing definition.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So 3, 5, and 8? @jwhite12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Where did 3, 5,and 8 come from?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Those are the distances between the numbers.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You need the distance between each number and the mean (10)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So the answer is 5?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got a decimal. Did you find the 5 distances?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh so it would be 10.5?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What numbers are you using for the distances?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jwhite12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok your numbers are: 2, 5, 10, 15, 18. We need to figure out how far each one of those numbers is from 10.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2 is 8 steps from 10 5 is 5 steps from 10...
