How do I use the the elimination method to solve this?

OpenStudy (quickstudent):

OpenStudy (godlovesme):

i'll help r u familiar with the elimination method?

OpenStudy (quickstudent):

Yes, I am. But the problem is I don't see how I can use the elimination method in this problem.

OpenStudy (quickstudent):

@Godlovesme

OpenStudy (godlovesme):

|dw:1424395658651:dw| our goal is to either eliminate x or y

OpenStudy (quickstudent):

What if I multiplied a number by the first equation?

OpenStudy (quickstudent):

Like if I multiplied -10 -10(x) + -10(y) = -10(8) -10x - 10y = -80 @Godlovesme

OpenStudy (godlovesme):

this is what we can do |dw:1424395872351:dw| i multiplied the 1st equation by -12

OpenStudy (godlovesme):

nvm ur way works too awesome job btw! :)

OpenStudy (quickstudent):

OK, Thanks! :)

OpenStudy (godlovesme):

u're welcome lemme know what u get as ur final answer :)

OpenStudy (quickstudent):

Ok, sure:)

OpenStudy (quickstudent):

Here's what I did: x + y = 8 -10(x) + -10(y) = -10(8) -10x - 10y = -80 _____________________________________________________________________________ -10x - 10y = -80 + 12x + 10y = 86 = 2x + 0 = 6 2x = 6 2x/2 = 6/2 x = 3 _____________________________________________________________________________ 3 + y = 8 3 + y - 3 = 8 - 3 y = 5 Solution: (3, 5) @Godlovesme

OpenStudy (godlovesme):

one sec..

OpenStudy (godlovesme):

u r correct awesome :)

OpenStudy (quickstudent):

Thanks:)

OpenStudy (godlovesme):

yw :)
