Category North South West Midwest Political Industrial revolution affected the north a great deal and was all pretty much positive except for the problems that came when immigrants started coming in but the immigrants made the population in the north skyrocket. In the South there were many struggles when it came to segregation and discrimination against African Americans . Their willingness to work for lower wages and the cultural differences between them and the white settlers led to friction. They faced problems, including riots and discriminatory laws. Social the population was very low and it didn’t seem like a great place to live in . The population was low and it didn't seem like a great place to be during this period. The only social conflicts I noticed in my reading was discrimination towards the Chinese immigrants. The reason was because the Chinese were willing to work for less money which appealed more to owners of factories and farms. This frustrated the people in the west. Economic or Type of Economy The economy was doing well, the transportation system was going good. The only problems were the labor unions that formed when the workers decided they wanted more pay and better working conditions and the wealthy wanted to increase profits in their businesses the south had to rebuild a new economic structure . By the 1880s, however, the South had begun to rebuild. Although it remained mostly agricultural, the South began developing its timber industry. Coal and iron deposits in the southern Appalachian Mountains gave rise to steel production in Birmingham, Alabama. Its rich natural resources, such as timber and metals, provided necessary raw materials for production back east. Population Change The only problems were the labor unions that formed when the workers decided they wanted more pay and better working conditions and the wealthy wanted to increase profits in their businesses Many African Americans left the South to work in new factories in the North and Midwest. There they had a better chance of earning good wages and improving their economic and social standing. Like the south, the west had a very small population. It was mainly made up of original U.S. citizens who chose to move west for more land and the natural resources. There were a few immigrants who migrated there though. Most of the immigrants were Chinese. Transportation Most industry and rail transportation were destroyed during the Civil War. The war also ended slavery, which took away the South's main source of labor. In the West their transportation was great with the transcontinental railroad and there economy base was agriculture but they had problems when immigrants from China came in and offered to work for less wages, this threatened everyone else jobs. thiosis what I mean
