which ratio represents cosT?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (phi):

did you learn SOH CAH TOA ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how would i find the answer? i learned it i just don't know how to solve it @phi

OpenStudy (phi):

which of the three (out of SOH CAH TOA) should you use ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

CAH , but how do i set it up ?

OpenStudy (phi):

yes. C stands for cosine and CAH is supposed to help you remember cosine = adjacent / hypotenuse any idea which side in the triangle is the hypotenuse ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes and i just divide adjacent by hypotenuse? how do i use the C though? @phi

OpenStudy (phi):

The first step is figure out which of the 3 sides is the hypotenuse. can you do that ?

OpenStudy (phi):

the hypotenuse is always opposite the 90 degree angle the hypotenuse is always the longest side (in a right triangle)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i know that

OpenStudy (phi):

so what is the length of the hypotenuse?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

17 the adjacent is 8

OpenStudy (phi):

ok on the 17 CAH means cos = adj/hyp = adj/17 that means you can cross off 2 of the choices because the bottom number has to be 17

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a?

OpenStudy (phi):

to find which side is the adjacent (out of the 2 sides that are left), you put your finger on the angle we are using (adj vs opp depends on the angle)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is it 8 over 17?

OpenStudy (phi):

put your finger on angle T one side makes part of the angle that forms T that is the adjacent side the other side is "opposite" angle T (on the far side... in this case the bottom side is the opposite side) you want the adjacent side.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

8 over 17? @phi

OpenStudy (phi):

OpenStudy (phi):

your life will get easier if you can name each of the 3 sides ,once you pick one of the angles (that is *not* 90 degrees)
