OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Linear is 1 dimension so \(x^1\). Area is 2 dimensions so \(x^2\) Volume is 3 dimensions so \(x^3\) To double the lengths, you multiply each leangth by \(2^1=2\) But in volume this becomes \(2^3=8\) so 8 times the volume.
