Why is base of logarith taken to be e

\(e\) is not "taken", you're free to use any base you wish :) However the base of natural logarithm is "e" because "e" is very much natural Notice that the derivative of \(\log_a x\) is \(\dfrac{1}{x\log_e a}\) and when you set the base to \(e\) you get a simple looking expression : \(\frac{1}{x}\). see this for more cool properties of e http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E_%28mathematical_constant%29
