\(\huge \sf Brain \ Structures \ and \ their \ Functions\)

jagr2713 (jagr2713):

\[\hspace{70pt}\huge \sf \text{Introduction} \] \(\bigstar\) The Brain is what keeps us alive. Every second of every day our brain is collecting and sending out signals from and to the parts of our body. Even when you are sleeping, our brain is still up keeping everything working for us.

jagr2713 (jagr2713):

\[ \hspace{70pt}\huge \sf \text{The Cerebrum } \] \(\bigstar\)The \(\bf cerebrum\) or cortex, is the largest part of the human brain. This is where things like perception, imagination, thought, judgment, and decision occur. The cerebral cortex is divided into four sections, called "lobes". \(\bullet \bf FrontalLobe\) - Is located behind the forehead and is associated with reasoning, planning, parts of speech, movement, emotions, and problem solving. \(\bullet \bf Parietal Lobe \) - Is located on the top of the head and is associated with movement, orientation, recognition, perception of stimuli. \(\bullet \bf Occipital Lobe \) – Is located at the rearmost lobe of the head and is associated with visual processing. \(\bullet \bf Temporal Lobe \) – Is located beneath the temples and is associated with perception and recognition of auditory stimuli, memory, and speech.

jagr2713 (jagr2713):

\(\bigstar\) The \(\bf corpus \ callosum \) is a thick band of nerve fibers that divides the cerebrum into left and right hemispheres. The corpus callosum connects the left and right sides of the brain and also transfers motor, sensory, and cognitive information between the brain hemispheres. \(\bigstar\) \(\bf Function\): The corpus callosum is involved in several functions of the body including, \(\bullet\) \(\bf Communication \ between \ Brain \ Hemispheres\) \(\bullet\) \(\bf Eye \ Movement\) \(\bullet\) \(\bf Maintaining \ the \ Balance \ of \ Arousal \ and \ Attention\) \(\bullet\) \(\bf Tactile \ Localizations\) \(\bigstar\) \(\bf Location\): The \(\bf corpus \ callosum\) is located underneath the cerebrum at the center of the brain.

jagr2713 (jagr2713):

\[ \hspace{70pt}\huge \sf \text{The Cerebellum} \] \(\bigstar\) The \(\bf cerebellum\) is similar to the cerebrum because they both have two hemispheres and has a highly folded surface. The cerebellum helps us make smooth, coordinated movements like walking, running, writing etc. Without the cerebellum, movement would not happen properly. \(\bigstar\) The \(\bf Limbic \ System\) or emotional brain, is found within the cerebrum. Here is where we find the \(\bf Thalamus\), \(\bf Hypothalamus\), \(\bf Amygdala\), and \(\bf Hippocampus.\) \(\bullet \bf Thalamus \) – The \(\bf Thalamus\) Is a large mass of gray matter deeply situated in the forebrain at the topmost portion of the diencephalon. The thalamus takes information coming from the body and sends it on to the cerebral cortex. \(\bullet \bf Hypothalamus \) – The \(\bf Hypothalamus\) is part of the diencephalon, ventral to the thalamus. The structure is involved in functions including homeostasis, emotion, thirst, hunger, circadian rhythms, and control of the autonomic nervous system. And also it controls the pituitary. \(\bullet \bf Amygdala \) – The \(\bf Amygdala\) is part of the telencephalon, located in the temporal lobe; involved in memory, emotion, and fear. It is beneath the surface of the front, medial part of the temporal lobe where it causes the bulge on the surface called the uncus. \(\bullet \bf Hippocampus \) – The \(\bf Hippocampus\)is located deep within our brains, the hippocampus works with the cerebral cortex to create memories. The hippocampus also helps you remember how to navigate, or move around, your environment based on how you have moved around in the past.

jagr2713 (jagr2713):

\[\hspace{70pt}\huge \sf \text{The Brain Stem} \] \(\bigstar\) The \(\bf brain stem\) is responsible for basic vital life functions such as breathing, heartbeat, and blood pressure. The brainstem is located below the cerebellum and connects the brain to the spinal cord. The brainstem is a collection of three areas of the brain. These parts are the \(\bf Medulla\), \(\bf Pons\), and the \(\bf Midbrain.\) \(\bullet \bf Medulla \)– The \(\bf Medulla \ oblongata\) is the most part of the brain stem, between the pons and spinal cord. It is responsible for maintaining vital body functions, such as breathing and heart rate. \(\bullet \bf Pons\) – \(\bf Pons\) are the part of the brainstem that links the medulla oblongata and the thalamus. It is involved in motor control and sensory analysis. It has parts that are important for the level of consciousness and for sleep. \(\bullet \bf Midbrain\) - The \(\bf Midbrain\) is a small central part of the brainstem, developing from the middle of the primitive or embryonic brain. It is involved in functions such as vision, hearing, eye movement, and body movement.

jagr2713 (jagr2713):

Thanks Guys

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

Would you define life or what is to be alive?

OpenStudy (inowalst):

Amazing work!

jagr2713 (jagr2713):

Thank You :D

OpenStudy (confluxepic):

Great job. @jagr2713

jagr2713 (jagr2713):

Thanks doing another one that will go deeper in Bio :D

OpenStudy (confluxepic):

Can you tell me where you got some of the information from? I would want to learn more about it.

OpenStudy (alexandervonhumboldt2):

AWESOME
