What's 2(x+5)-7=3(x-2)
OpenStudy (academicgurusinc):
Are you talking about finding the "x" or just simplifying?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
an equation?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Simplifying.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
no it is "solve for x"

you do not "simplify" and equation, you solve one
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Okay. Thank you guys.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
multiply out on both sides first using the distributive property
then combine like terms
once that is done we can solve for \(x\)
OpenStudy (anonymous):
for example, the left hand side is
\[2(x+5)-7=2x+10-7=2x+3\]
OpenStudy (academicgurusinc):
So first step, starting distributing the 2(x+5) so you'll have to multiply 2 by (x+5), meaning you have to multiply each term in parenthesis by 2. So you'll get 2x+10. Can you figure out the other side?

Opps didn't see the -7 so you'll have2x+10-7 so 2x+3
OpenStudy (butterflydreamer):
2 ( x + 5 ) is the same as 2*x + 2*5 = 2x + 10.
So then similarly on the right side we have:
3( x - 2) which is the same as 3*x - 3*2 = ?
