OpenStudy (philcua):

what does like terms mean

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Quantities with the same variables, like 2x and 3x, or 4b and 9b. They have the same variable, which means you can add them together. 2x+3x=5x. 4b+9b=13b.

OpenStudy (philcua):

oh so when the say add like terms the mean that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

To add like terms, yep. You do it like the examples I gave.

OpenStudy (philcua):

oh ok thx bro

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No problem!

OpenStudy (freckles):

\[4x,6x^2 \text{ are not like terms because } x \text{ is not the same as } x^2 \] So you cannot add/subtract 4x and 6x^2 So you come across something like this 6x^2+4x you do nothing well unless the directions say to factor :p
