Why not? It's the end of a sentence.. If it were going to continue on, THEN you wouldnt need a period.

OK, so there's these things called tags. And what those are is just the "he said" or "she said". When you have those after the quote like this: "Sally ate some pie," Susan said. You have to put the comma instead of a period. But if the tag is before the quote...like this: Susan said, "Sally ate some pie." Then you put the period. That's why I think your answer is right.
