For thousands of years, Native American tribes lived in the area from Alaska to Northern California. They built villages near beaches or the mouths of streams. The families lived together in very long houses made of wood. The nearby forests were full of cedar trees. These could grow up to 80 feet tall. Their shape made them just right for cutting into planks or long sections. The planks formed the shape of their houses. They also softened the bark and used it to make clothing. The coastal tribes mainly lived on fish, so they needed strong boats. Wood carvers used the tall cedar trees to make canoes. Some of the canoes were as big as 50 feet long and 8 feet wide. 3. What is the most likely reason that Pacific Northwest tribes built their villages near beaches or streams? so they could hunt bear and elk because the cedar trees grew there to be close to where they fished because it was warmer there
