Maria and Edwin have $23.00 each to spend at a book fair, where all students receive a 25% discount. They both want to purchase a copy of the same book, which normally sells for $26.50 plus 10% sales tax. To check if she has enough to purchase the book, Maria takes 25% of $26.50 and subtracts that amount from the normal price. She takes 10% of the discounted selling price and adds it back to find the purchase amount. Edwin takes 75% of the normal purchase price and then computes 110% of the reduced price. Is Maria correct? Is Edwin correct? Do they have enough money to purchase the book? Expla

hi can u help me

OpenStudy (baby_bear69):

@ganeshie8 @ParthKohli @mathstudent55 @wio @paki

OpenStudy (nothingwasthesame):

ok first question do you know how to discount a price

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

25%

OpenStudy (nothingwasthesame):

ok u just cleared up a lot of things :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (nothingwasthesame):

ok well first step because i will have you do it so if you take 25% out of 23 dollars what is it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-22.75

OpenStudy (nothingwasthesame):

ok no um put 23 times .25 nd you get what

OpenStudy (anonymous):

575

OpenStudy (anonymous):

23.25

OpenStudy (nothingwasthesame):

23 minus 5 . 75 is

OpenStudy (anonymous):

times subtract

OpenStudy (nothingwasthesame):

no just plain 23 dollars minus that 5 .75 dollars

OpenStudy (anonymous):

17.25

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it

OpenStudy (nothingwasthesame):

and that my friend is how you figure out a discount so it makes the problem a lot clearer now because you know how to do it now

OpenStudy (nothingwasthesame):

you do know now right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

????

OpenStudy (nothingwasthesame):

ok 17.25 is the discount price of 25 % of 23 dollars (this was just to make sure you know it ) now that you know how easy it is the whole problem is clear ok 26.50 u have to discount 25 % off of it now

OpenStudy (nothingwasthesame):

and now that you see it is it a bit more clearer to understand

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do i have to *

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1.5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is that the answer

OpenStudy (nothingwasthesame):

no ok times 26 .50 times .25 and the answer is

OpenStudy (nothingwasthesame):

then you just subtrract that answer from 26.50

OpenStudy (anonymous):

636.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-19.85

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes no

OpenStudy (nothingwasthesame):

ok yea but thke away the negative sign

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok is that the answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

19.85

OpenStudy (nothingwasthesame):

ok no its 19.875

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is that the final answer?????

OpenStudy (nothingwasthesame):

no u have to add the 10 percent now its k i know it (only i cant give it some im trying to explain )

OpenStudy (anonymous):

22.08

OpenStudy (nothingwasthesame):

its 21.8625 but round it and its 22 dollars

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok is that it because the test is about to go

OpenStudy (nothingwasthesame):

lol is it becoming a little bit clear or did i confuse you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no its clear

OpenStudy (nothingwasthesame):

yup so maria is correct and you can explain the process of how she is

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes i can

OpenStudy (nothingwasthesame):

im not even sure bout edwin the boy is complicated
