Determine if the solution set for the system of equations shown is the empty set, contains one point or is infinite. x - y = 5 2x + y = 1 {} 1 solution infinite

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you want to go ahead and solve it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nvm

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't know how to solve it lol. That's why I posted the question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@satellite73

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the question i asked was "do you want to solve it" they are not actually asking for you to solve it, they are only asking how many solutions are there? but if we go ahead and solve it, then we will know

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh okay. But how do I solve it? Lol I've never done this kinda stuff before

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[x-y=5\\ 2x+y=1\] add them up in a column, what do you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok lets go slow what is \(5+1\)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so that is on the right side of the equal signs what is \(x+2x\)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok and what is \(-y+y\)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Nothing?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, or as we say in math class "zero" so you have \[3x=6\] and you can solve that for \(x\) in your head

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x=2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so there is one solution
