C The oldest living male in a family – he had certain traditional responsibilities, including religious duties, leading the family setting an example of law-abiding and morality and the property of the family. An uncle could be the paterfamilias, a family was more than the “nuclear” unit it is seen as today and included all blood relatives and even the slaves.
