WILL MEDAL AND FAN John is trying to solve the following equation. 1/3 (8x + 9) = 2x Explain and justify the first step John could use to solve the equation.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Choices! A. John could divide the 8x by 3 to eliminate the need for the set of parenthesis. B. John could subtract 2x from the right side of the equation in order to combine like terms. C. John could subtract 9 from the right side of the equation to isolate the variable on the left side. D. John could multiply each side of the equation by 3 to keep the equation balanced and to simplify the equation.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't think it is C because the 9 is in parenthesis. I am sort of leaning towards D, but I am not sure.

OpenStudy (igreen):

I think you're correct.

OpenStudy (igreen):

We can divide 1/3 to both sides, which is the same thing as multiplying by 3.

OpenStudy (igreen):

Yeah, the rest don't make any sensne.

OpenStudy (igreen):

*sense

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, I will go with D. :)

OpenStudy (igreen):

:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yup! Thanks! Here is your medal and fan.
