Multiplication factors that go into 46

OpenStudy (anonymous):

By multiplication factors, I am assuming there can be no decimal factors. So what I would do is start with the number one. So 1x46=46 This is an even number so we know it is divisible by two. So 2x23=46 We now know that any other factors, if any, are between 2 and 23. So use the divisibility rule for three by summing the digits. So summing the digits of 46 4+6=10. We can now see that is not divisible by 3 or for that matter any multiple of 3. We see that 46 ends with a 6 and not a 5 or 0, so we know it is not divisible by 5 or 10. We now test the other numbers between 2 and 13. So you don't have to test all of the numbers. I would place the number 1, 46, 2 and 23 in a parenthesis and work toward the middle. So it would look like this. (1, 2, 23, 46) So checking the number 4, I would think 4x12 = 48 So four is not a factor of 46. (1,2, 4, 12, 23, 46) Note that 4x12 are not factors of 46 and the numbers left to check are between 4 and 12. Next I would check the number 7, I would think 7x7= 49. So seven is not a factor of 46. (1, 2, 7,7, 23, 46) Note that 7x7 are not factors of 46 and that there are no other whole numbers between 7 and 7. Since there are no whole numbers between 7 and 7, then I have checked for all the possible factors of 46. So my answer would be 1x46 and 2x23
