Germany's major fear in war was being forced into a position where they had to fight a war on two fronts, meaning they had to fight a war on the east and the west. They realized this fear in world war 1 in which they had to fight the French and the British in the west, and the Russians in the East. Hitler made this pact to avoid having to worry about Russian involvement in the East Also there was a certain degree of respect for Stalin's totalitarian state, as well as their military power. Hitler Broke this pact during Operation Barberosa When they invaded the Russian Borders he did this cause though he was worried of a two front war by this time of the war Hitler all but Conquered the West save England and he wanted to remove the Russian threat as soon as possible thus he invaded Russia
