Are these functions linear or nonlinear? 1. y − 4 = −8(x – 1) 2. y = x^4 3. y – x^2 = 4.5 4. 3x + 5y = 15

sammixboo (sammixboo):

Anything with exponents are not linear

sammixboo (sammixboo):

It would be exponential

sammixboo (sammixboo):

A curved line

sammixboo (sammixboo):

Linear is a straight line

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay. Thanks. But I know the difference between linear and nonlinear I just need help graphing.

sammixboo (sammixboo):

The only one I can help with there is #4, putting it into slope-intercept form. To do the rest you gotta use a graphing calculator or something

sammixboo (sammixboo):

And #1, sorry forgot to say that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I can put them into slope-intercept form too I just need help graphing.

sammixboo (sammixboo):

Use desmos.com that can graph equations for you :)

sammixboo (sammixboo):

I am not sure how I can help much

sammixboo (sammixboo):

With graphing

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you. So just to be sure 2 and 3 are nonlinear

OpenStudy (amorfide):

@sammixboo an exponent of 1 is linear, how can you say it is not linear

sammixboo (sammixboo):

Thats something I forgot to mention. Anything to the power of one is still the same number so

sammixboo (sammixboo):

too***

sammixboo (sammixboo):

4^1 = 4 5^1 = 5 So it would stay the same

OpenStudy (amorfide):

I was just referring to your statement saying anything with an exponent is non linear, but 1 is an exponent
