Lord Cornwallis set up his forces with their backs to 'Sea' with the thought that the British Navy, being so strong, would be there for protection and help if needed. At this time a mis-information campaign by George Washington, through Spies Peter Salem (a black man) and Robert Townsend (a white man) as well as setting up false encampment's near New York, had General Clinton believing that the Continental Army and the French military would attack New York. This 'trick' caused General Clinton to stay in New York awaiting the attack, while the French Navy set up to cut off any chance of reinforcement to Lord Cornwallis. When the attack commenced the British were caught with no way to retreat or replenish. Cornwallis seeing defeat to be imminent he sent word of surrender to General Washington. Note: Lord Cornwallis still not respecting the America military refused to attend the signing of the treaty, explaining that he was to 'ill' to be present. Cornwallis led his troops into the peninsula and set up a base without orders and a weak troop so America trapped them in the peninsula and Cornwallis surrendered.
