OpenStudy (elonasushchik):

Draw a right triangle and label the legs 1 and 1 as shown below: A right triangle is shown. Both legs are labeled 1 and the hypotenuse is labeled c. The two non right angles inside the triangle are labeled a and b. Find the missing side length for c and the missing angle measures for a and b in the image above. Write a paragraph telling how you found the missing values. You must show all work to receive credit.

OpenStudy (elonasushchik):

@SolomonZelman I need help

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

there is only one case, when 2 legs are equivalent in a right triangle. if you don't know yet which case it is we can find out now.

OpenStudy (elonasushchik):

okay..

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

you have 2 non-right angles (and they are same since they form the same sides). and the 3rd triangle is 90 degrees. we know that the sum of angles in a triangle is equivalent to 180 degrees. you can call "a" - x (and since "b" is same as "a" we can call "b" - x, as well).

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

\(\large\color{black}{ \displaystyle x+ x+ 90=180 }\)

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

~) does this setup make sense? ~) can you solve for x? (what do you get?)

OpenStudy (elonasushchik):

kindov... X??

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

alright... what does NOT make sense so far ?

OpenStudy (elonasushchik):

the x part..

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

do you understand when I say that angle "a" and angle "b" must be equivalent, because they form the sides of the same length?

OpenStudy (elonasushchik):

ya i do...

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

"the sum of all angles in a triangle is 180 degrees" is that clear ?

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

(this is true about any triangle)

OpenStudy (elonasushchik):

ya I know soo...

OpenStudy (elonasushchik):

c = 1 2 + 1 2 = 2

OpenStudy (elonasushchik):

I meant 1 sqaured 2

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

So, a and b are both equivalent to each other, and sum of all angles in a triangle is 180. so this is what we can say a + b + 90 = 180 a + a + 90 =180 a=?

OpenStudy (elonasushchik):

60

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

a + a + 90 = 180 a + a + 90 - 90 = 180 - 90 a + a = 90 2a = 90 a = ?

OpenStudy (elonasushchik):

i dunno

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

divide by 2 on both sides

OpenStudy (elonasushchik):

45

OpenStudy (elonasushchik):

@SolomonZelman

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

yes

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

you are done I guess... we found the a and b

OpenStudy (elonasushchik):

Okay Thanx @SolomonZelman Ur help was the best!

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

I am lagging, would have replied faster otherwise.
