how do you know when a compound is a gas, liquid, or solid?
In terms of particles?
A solid is made of tightly compacted, slow moving particles with a definite shape. A liquid is an amorphous form of matter with a definite volume without a definite shape. A gas is made of free moving particles that have no definite shape nor definite volume.
And it should state whether or not it's a gas, liquid, or solid. And you can figure out whether or not the element is a metal or nonmetal through the periodic table.
In terms what? With which given information?
when elements combine such as Ag (silver) and the compound NO3 (nitrate), I know Silver is a solid but how do I determine what Nitrate is? Is it a gas? So, does this mean AgNO3 would be aqueous?
AgNO3 is aqueous
Generally, chemicals that end in 'ate' or 'ite' are anions in aqueous solution.
