How does the setting affect the theme of this passage?
It had been 20 years since Ashti's people, the Summis, had been able to make their own decisions to determine their destiny. The Marawats had ruled them since Ashti was a baby. Now, she was preparing to lead the Summis to victory, to free them, once and for all, from Marawat tyranny. The band of rebels stood in the valley 3,000 strong, spears and knives in hand, waiting for her command. As the sun rose behind them, setting the sky on fire, Ashti knew there would be many dead before this day was out, on both sides. The last time her people rose up, they lost a third of their population and thousands more in the punishments that followed. Yet, stories of that peasant rebellion were still told in hushed tones around the fire; they were still the source of deep Summi pride, and they have kept alive the spark. She and others had nurtured that spark of hope until today, when the Summi people would either break the bonds that held them or die trying. Ashti turned to face her army of brave men and women one last time. Then, she turned back toward where their oppressors were just waking, oblivious to what awaited them. The moment had come. Ashti raised her fist into the fiery sky and gave the signal. How does the setting affect the theme of this passage? A. The early morning causes everything to be very quiet. B. The fiery sunrise symbolizes the battle for freedom. C. The hilltop allows Ashti to see the opposing armies. D. The surrounding valley sets the tone of the passage.
