OpenStudy (thedj4jc):

5x + y = 6 5x + 3y = -4 The y-coordinate of the solution to the system shown is _____. -5 -1 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Are you there?

OpenStudy (thedj4jc):

Yes

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

subtract the systems from each other. or to avoid any confusion what's so ever, multiply one of the equations times -1 and add. (which basically does subtraction of one of the equations from the other, BUT without any confusion)

OpenStudy (thedj4jc):

So, that would cancel out the 5x and the equation would become -2y = 10, right?

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

yes, very nice!

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

then y = ?

OpenStudy (thedj4jc):

-5, because you'd have to divide both sides by -2.

OpenStudy (thedj4jc):

Thank you!!

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

yes, and after you found y, you can plug in the solution for y into any of the original equations to solve for x.

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

like, this way: 5x + (-5) = 6 (plugged y solution into the first eq. )

OpenStudy (thedj4jc):

Ok, thanks!!!

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

anytime... good work !
