I am unsure how to multiply these two polynomials. Please help and provide an explanation. :) Simplify. (z^2 + 5z + 8)(z^2 + 2z + 6)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[\color{red}{(z^2 + 5z + 8)(z^2 + 2z + 6)}\]

OpenStudy (welshfella):

divide everything in the second parentheses by z^2, by + 5z and then by +6 and simplify. This is the Distributive Law.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I thought to do that, but then I was unsure. I will try it and tell you my answer.

OpenStudy (welshfella):

ok

OpenStudy (welshfella):

note i cant give you the answerr but i'll tell you if you are right.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know. I want to find the answer myself, and have you check it for me. :)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

yeah FOIL is taught as tho its some magic concoction, but its just distributing things out.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

and this problem has nothing to do with division

OpenStudy (amistre64):

(a+b+c) (x+y+z) distribute a(x+y+z) + b(x+y+z) + c(x+y+z) distribute again ax+ay+az + bx+by+bz + cx+cy+cz

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The answer: \[\color{red}{z^4 + 7z^3 + 24z^2 +46z + 48}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks for the help! @amistre64 @welshfella

OpenStudy (amistre64):

good luck :)

OpenStudy (welshfella):
