OpenStudy (welshfella):

I'd like to get something cleared up. I see quite a few people who are explaining how to do a problem and also giving the answer. Is this acceptable? The Code of Conduct seems unclear about this.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

doing all the work for them is considered a direct answer since it does not involve the askers participation in the solution process.

OpenStudy (confluxepic):

As long as they guide the user.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the interaction is spose to be guidance while the asker works it out; and then corrections as needed.

eclipsedstar (eclipsedstar):

Yeah I was curious about this too. \(\color{blue}{\text{Originally Posted by}}\) @e.mccormick If you are not going to at least explain why you think it is A, it is a direct answer. \(\color{blue}{\text{End of Quote}}\) ^ That shows that you need to explain your reasoning too, right?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

thats emccormick saying that if your not going to explain how to work the process then all youve done is given a direct answer.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

my latex coding is down so all i get is textcode :)

OpenStudy (confluxepic):

Here you go. http://prntscr.com/6kteig

OpenStudy (confluxepic):

It needs the askers participation. It needs guidance from the helper. Bottom line is that the asker learns.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

in nonmath subjects, direct answers can be a slippery slope. history for example ... its a memorization of dates and names and stuff, hard to explain the why but youhave to enlist the askers participation so that they think about the solutions

OpenStudy (welshfella):

yea - you could give a detailed method and answer but the asker might only look at the answer and has learned nothing!

OpenStudy (just_one_last_goodbye):

In my opinion I think the only thing the code of conduct is talking about in Sector 1 Verse 1 (1.1) it says dont give direct answers meaning without explanation http://prntscr.com/6ktfl5

OpenStudy (amistre64):

direct answers are any answers (right or wrong) that do not have the askers participation in the process.

OpenStudy (welshfella):

yes - that passage led me to ask the question.

eclipsedstar (eclipsedstar):

That's what I once tried in history. The user seemingly guessed by saying, "Is it A?" and I would painstakingly explain why it is wrong until the last option. Then I have no idea if the asker actually learned because, for all I know, that user could have just taken the answer in the end and ignored my explanations.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the simplest form is: its A then you have the more complicated form of: it A becuase then you have the convoluted form as: this is that and the other thing gives us A

OpenStudy (just_one_last_goodbye):

Agreed @amistre64 thats why most of us say "any idea" like asking if the asker has a guess of what the answer might be

OpenStudy (amistre64):

spose a child asks why the sky is blue .... the old proffessor gives a brilliant and detailed explanation ... the child has heard words, but nothing is really learned and so they wander off with their childish notion that angels must pee blue ....

OpenStudy (confluxepic):

Only a devil would pee on the sky!

OpenStudy (welshfella):

Anyway - thanks guys - I'm a lot more clear about it now.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i heard buzz aldrin made an oppsie :)

OpenStudy (welshfella):

@confluxepic lol!!

OpenStudy (confluxepic):

:)

OpenStudy (confluxepic):

@amistre64 Buzz Aldrin peed in the suit itself.

OpenStudy (just_one_last_goodbye):

=.= Astronaut suits are made for that... theirs special compartments

eclipsedstar (eclipsedstar):

Ok. So what does astronauts doing something in their suit have to do with the original question.

OpenStudy (just_one_last_goodbye):
