Solve the system by substitution. Write the solution. x+5y=4 2x+10y=8

pooja195 (pooja195):

ok subtract 5y so you get x=-5y+4 then plug it in \[2(-5y+4)+10y=8\] solve

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

If it were me, I would divide the second by 2 and then stop in my tracks - seeing that there would be nothing left to do.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But if you subtract 5y wouldn't you also subtract 4 and x?

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

well.. it says by "substitution" so.... why not just solve one for either "x" or "y" and then substitute on the other see what you get

OpenStudy (luffingsails):

Which is what @pooja195 did.

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

I would consider any recognition that it cannot be solved, or the solution is obvious, in compliance with the request for "substitution".
