anyway, since no one wants to help other than me who doesn't know history, I'll try :) Let's use my technique-finding clues from the question. "power to make you believe absurdities" so from this phrase, I don't think, violence is involved here Superstitions- maybe-about 50% of my instinct heresy- maybe - 50% of my instincts because I think voltaire has something to do with religious doctrine arrogance- totally out. So we are left with, superstitions and heresy which one do you think?
I believe it may be superstition. Do you think that is right? And I appreciate you helping me!
@Data_LG2
yes, that is what I'm thinking too. But heresy is pulling me lol anyway, why do you think it is superstition? maybe we can get something out from your knowledge about Voltaire ^_^
He studied the ideas of Sir Isaac Newton and John Locke. Voltaire was impressed by the English respect for freedom of speech. After he returned to France, he took up the cause of liberty and pushed for social reform. In one of his most famous works, the short novel Candide (1759), he wrote about the ills of society, using humor and irony.

Sorry I took so long to respond. I read some stuff about Voltaire and they are mostly about how he contributed to the enlightenment period. And I found one quote from him, that supports that answer, he said from his refuge in Switzerland that "Superstition sets the whole world on fire" which kinda similar to the quotation from your question ^_^
