What is the approximate value fo the function at x=6?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

first draw a vertical line that passes through x = 6 on the x axis (shown in blue in the attached image)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok yhen what?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

mark the point of intersection between the red curve and the blue line (green point) then extend a horizontal line from that point of intersection until you hit the y axis see attached

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so where does that green horizontal line end up on the y axis? give a rough approximation (it doesn't have to be perfect)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

like 6, and 2.5? im not quite sure if i get it

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

only look at the y axis and where the green line touches the y axis

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

to me, it looks just a bit below 2.5, so maybe 2.3 or 2.2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

like 2.3? or 2.2 that makes sense lol

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so if x = 6, then y is roughly 2.3 or 2.2 the ordered pair of that green point is (6, 2.3) or (6,2.2) however you interpret it

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

the y value of the point on the red curve is the output of the function x is the input of the function

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you! what about this one? its similar but im still not quite understanding it

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what are the instructions?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What is the approximate value of the function at x = -8?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

draw a vertical line through x = -8 on the x axis mark where the vertical line crosses the red function curve then draw a horizontal line until you reach the y axis

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

tell me what you get

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it gonna be 2? -2?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

not sure how you're getting -2

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

it's really close to +2, maybe like 1.9 or something

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ugh this stuff is so confusing. so its rounded to 2? positive?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lohhh thats what i meant was 2 i was just loking at it and thought -2

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yeah if you have to go to the nearest whole number then 2 works

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you so much!!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
