OpenStudy (anonymous):

How many different shapes of bacteria are there? a. 1 shape b. 2 shapes c. 3 shapes d. 4 shapes

OpenStudy (somy):

what do you think? which shapes do you know of?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk

OpenStudy (somy):

well there are a lot of shapes actually but we can put them into 3 categories and these are http://www.merckmanuals.com/media/home/figures/INF_bacteria_shapes.gif

OpenStudy (somy):

but remember, there are way more shapes http://www.microbiologyonline.org.uk/about-microbiology/introducing-microbes/bacteria

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im still confuzed

OpenStudy (somy):

hmm what exactly do you not get? tell me so that i can clarify it to u

OpenStudy (anonymous):

every thaing

OpenStudy (somy):

hmm well look there are a loooot of bacteria that exist among us

OpenStudy (somy):

they are not the same they look different have different shapes or size but there is ofc a very important similarity between all bacteria to CONSIDER them as bacteria and that is - their DNA is naked in the cytoplasm, and also we see presence of plasmids - circular DNA molecules these one one of the features that all bacteria share

OpenStudy (somy):

now thought they do share that very important similarity, they are different in shape or size or function or lifestyle kind of

OpenStudy (somy):

its just like us Humans our genetic composition is around 99% same, only difference is 1% - crazy right? well guess what this 1% makes ALL of us SO unique so different in shape color size etc

OpenStudy (somy):

so same is with bacteria they have fundamental similarities among them but they are still different in other aspects and one of them are - shape

OpenStudy (somy):

so there a lot of shapes bacteria have but if we were to consider fundamental shapes then there would be, rod-shape, spherical shape, and spiral shapes

OpenStudy (somy):

does it make sense more or less?

OpenStudy (kaylaprincess):

The three most common bacterial cell shapes are : 1. cocci (spherical) 2. bacilli (rod-shaped) 3. spirilla (curved shape)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanx

OpenStudy (warriorz13):

There are thousands of species of bacteria, but all of them are basically one of three different shapes. Some are rod- or stick-shaped and called bacilli (buh-sill-eye). Others are shaped like little balls and called cocci (cox-eye).
