Raj and Carly started at the same point and walked backwards in the same direction. The distance that Raj walked backwards can be represented as -x. The distance that Carly walked backwards can be represented as -y. a) Write an equation that can be used to find the absolute value of the distance (d) between Raj and Carly. b) What is the distance between Raj and Carly, if Raj walked 9 1/2 yards and Carly waked backwards 15 1/2 yards?

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

@amistre64

OpenStudy (amistre64):

can we assume that they started at 0?

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

Sure?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the waling backwards nensense had me confused if i was reading stuff correctly

OpenStudy (amistre64):

if we take their final positions, the distance between them is ... well the difference between them if one walks 3 feet, and the other walked 7 feet, both in the same direction then the distance between them is |3-7| or |7-3| right?

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

Yeah

OpenStudy (amistre64):

then what would you detemrine our equation to be?

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

|-x - (-y)| =d

OpenStudy (amistre64):

yeah, that works for me

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

And then for part B, would it be: -9.5 -(-15.5)=6 yards ?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

and for the record, saying: the absolute value of the distance is double speak since distances can only be unsigned.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

yes, but dont forget to wrap it in your || bars

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

Okay thanks :)
