Conures are small to medium birds that vary widely in size, coloration, and lifespan. They are also one of the less popular species of birds. Many people may recognize parakeets, parrots, and maybe a few canaries, but if you ask them if they’ve heard of the conure, they will ask what that is. Their tail length can span from long, slender tails, to short thicker tails. Colors of conures can range from vibrant reds and yellows to sleek whites and grays. Conures have wide, sturdy beaks that are multi-purposeful. The average lifespan of a conure depends on the species of conure. Certain species can live up to fifteen years, while others may live as long as forty years. The first conures were recorded in history in 1734 by Jean Baptiste Labat. (Mancini 12) Labat documented the birds in his notebook. Modern-day aviarians now believe that the conure species that Labat documented were Cuban conures, or a now extinct species. In about 1906, conures began to be imported to the United States and Europe, and by the mid-1930s, a few species were being bred in the United States. The first species to be bred was the sun conure. The jenday conure quickly followed. After these two species began to be bred in captivity, aviarists began to look into other conure species to breed. A conure’s natural habitat varies widely on the species of the conure. Habitats vary from Latin America to Southern Chile. Certain conure species were threatened due to deforestation and habitat destruction that was caused in the later 1970’s. As an event of this habitat damage there a meeting was held to prevent the conures from extinction. A man named Herbert R. Axelrod made a suggestion that conures began to bred in captivity. All of the countries agreed with the exception of Australia. This turn of events not only saved the conure’s natural habitat, but with their habitat restored, the conures avoided extinction. Conures are the social extroverts of the parrot family. They are clever birds who can learn a surplus of tricks and can usually be tamed very quickly and easily. They are also attention-seekers. Conures will do anything and everything to earn attention, whether its doing acrobatics from hanging toys to screeching until their owners grab earplugs. Conures have an amazing vocal capacity. They are not limited to just mimicking words; they can mimic sounds as well, such as the doorbell ringing or the microwave beeping.
