Mindy wants to solve the following system using the elimination method:
y = x – 4
y = 2x – 3
What number should the equation y = x – 4 be multiplied by to eliminate x? (4 points)
–1
–2
–4
–6

@Godlovesme
OpenStudy (godlovesme):
So in the second eqn we have 2x right and in the first one we have x which means 1x
OpenStudy (anonymous):
yes
OpenStudy (anonymous):
so if we have 1x and 2x doesnt that mean we can solve for x ??

So in order to eliminate we need to change that x
So we would multiply with -2 which will give us -2x
So now we have -2x and 2x so if u add them u will get 0 and that's how u eliminate :)
Got it?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
ya i think so so basically ur taking x - 2x = -2x ??
OpenStudy (godlovesme):
No I multiplied x by -2
U might be wondering where I got the -2 from ?
Well in the second eqn I have 2x which means the 2 is POSITIVE so I should multiply with the same # but different sign
OpenStudy (anonymous):
then how do u get -2x from muliplying
OpenStudy (godlovesme):
-2 * 1x
-2 * 1 = -2 and u just bring the x down which will give u -2x

mmk i have a few more
