Solving the Mystery of Hieroglyphics (1) Ancient Egyptian civilization flourished for thousands of years. (2) The culture, which became famous for the pharaohs, the pyramids, and the Sphinx, made advancements in technology, art, and medicine. (3) All of this progress was preserved in Egyptian writing. (4) The Egyptian language advanced as well, however, and Egyptians began to use new forms of writing. (5) Many of the secrets of their culture then became trapped behind the mystery of their ancient, forgotten writing system. (6) Most people are familiar with the ancient Egyptian writing system called hieroglyphics. (7) Many are familiar with King Tut as well. (8) With its characteristic shapes, such as eyes, hands, birds, and other animals, hieroglyphics is one of the most distinctive parts of Egyptian culture. (9) However, not until fairly recently, scholars did not really know what those shapes meant. (10) The Egyptians developed their writing system around 3000 BC. (11) All writing was done by people known as scribes, who wrote for pharaohs, priests, and politicians. (12) Gradually, however, writing became more popular among common people, such as artists and merchants, who wished to use writing in their daily lives. (13) As the art of writing spread throughout the Egyptian population, the form of writing began to change. (14) The Egyptian script became simpler, which made it easier to learn and use. (15) The characteristic shapes of animals and body parts soon became lines and dots that had no resemblance to their original shapes. (16) Finally, by the fourth century AD, the meanings of the original hieroglyphs were lost. (17) When Egypt was conquered by other people, such as Greeks, Romans, and Arabs, the languages of those cultures replaced Egyptian. (18) The ancient Egyptian language itself almost became extinct. (19) Hieroglyphs remained a mystery for hundreds of years. (20) Then, Egypt was invaded by the French in 1798. (21) In the Egyptian town of Rosette, as the French called it, a French soldier found a slab of stone. (22) The stone was dated 196 BC. (23) That was the time when Greeks ruled Egypt. (24) The same message was carved into the stone in hieroglyphics, a simpler form of Egyptian, and Greek. (25) A French scholar named Jean-François Champollion used his knowledge of languages to understand the meaning of hieroglyphics. (26) Champollion took over two years to translate the hieroglyphics on the Rosetta stone, as it became known. (27) In 1822, Champollion published his findings, and the world was once again able to understand the lost language of the ancient Egyptians.
