When you discuss calories in food, you are talking about kilocalories (Kcal), which is the amount of heat necessary to raise 1,000.0 mL of water by 1 degree Celsius, which is approximately4.18kJ. Compare the number of kilocalories in one gram of tomatoes to the number of kilocalories in one gram of corn chips.
Food labels will usually show of serving size of x grams. Divide the number of Calories listed (which are really kilocalories) by the mass to find kilocalories/gram.

@matt101, how would I solve it when given this information? All I need is an equation or formula.
The table gives you the total energy released by combustion of the given mass of each food. First, convert J to kCal. Then, you just need to divide the energy by the mass to find the kCal/g released for each food!
