How would HIV's effect on the immune system be as damaging if it invaded only killer T cells? Explain.

@alphadxg

OpenStudy (abb0t):

Well, do you understand what T-cells are?

OpenStudy (abb0t):

they aid in cell-mediated immunity, meaning when you get sick, or your body is exposed to a pathogen, either viral or bacterial (usually viral), these are the cells that come and help fight them off. Instead of using antibodies, these t-cells in general, are what cause apoptosis of some cells, when a pathogen enters, therefore, preventing a huge disaster.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im confused

OpenStudy (abb0t):

What are you confused about?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so if HIV were to attack killer T cells then, everything would be much worse than attacking the immune system because without enough T cells, the bacteria would be too much?

OpenStudy (abb0t):

Well, what happens when you attack something? It becomes weak and there are less, right? Think about it. If you have a large amount of men going into war with a large monster, who might win? Your defense would be weak.

OpenStudy (alphadxg):

@prguan T cells activate T Helper cells which activate other enzymes and biochemical reaction etc..... T cells kill off other pathogens within the body, if there are no T cells, you are literally vulnerable to dieing because T cells would not be able to attack other pathogens inside your body, so if you got sick nothing would be able to fight off that pathogen or bacteria you are being exposed to.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

are T cells and KILLER T CELLS the same

OpenStudy (alphadxg):

@prguan look at what @abb0t said, they are literally your army, they are the only ones that will attack other pathogens that are invaded into your body, if all of your soldiers die (T cells) you have no defense system in your body, and if you get any pathogen or bacteria from being "sick". then you are literally Sh!t out of luck, because you might die or get very sick because there is no defense to kill these pathogens and bacteria,

OpenStudy (abb0t):

Alpha is being very clear. Please read what she and I have both said.

OpenStudy (alphadxg):

\(\color{blue}{\text{Originally Posted by}}\) @prguan are T cells and KILLER T CELLS the same \(\color{blue}{\text{End of Quote}}\) lol yes, because they "Kill" hence killer T cells

OpenStudy (alphadxg):

@prguan "Killer T-cells find and destroy infected cells that have been turned into virus-making factories. To do this they need to tell the difference between the infected cells and healthy cells with the help of special molecules called antigens. Killer T-cells are able to find the cells with viruses and destroy them." -Wiki

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but dont helper t cells tell killer t cells what to kill off. so if the effect of hiv were on killer t cells, it would be very damaging because they are the only cells that kill off the pathogen. is that right^

OpenStudy (abb0t):

Quit making it more complicated than it is.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry?

OpenStudy (abb0t):

Killer T-cells have ‘X-ray vision’ as they are able to see inside our bodies own cells simply by scanning their surface. This mechanism allows killer T-cells to hunt down and destroy cells that are infected with germs or that have become cancerous. The other main type of T-cells are called helper T-cells. Helper T-cells orchestrate an immune response and play important roles in all arms of immunity

OpenStudy (alphadxg):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but if killer t cells were destroyed, it wouldn't really make a difference because helper t cells are the ones that are tell the killer t cells what to do

OpenStudy (alphadxg):

@prguan Your missing the point, Helper T cells can only help dictate what can be killed, but they can not do the killing.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok that makes sense
