OpenStudy (brycehale):

I need somebody to clear up the difference between a permutation and combination please.

OpenStudy (brycehale):

I learned that the difference is that order matters in a permutation, and order doesn't in a combination. But here is an example question: In how many ways can you choose a committee of 7 from a total of 20 people?

OpenStudy (brycehale):

I know how to solve it for both, but would this be considered a permutation or combination?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

permutation is rearranging into a set or group while combination is the act of selecting items

OpenStudy (anonymous):

each of different groups or selections which can be made by taking all no of things without refrence of order is called permutation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry combination*

OpenStudy (brycehale):

Hmm so this would be a combination?

OpenStudy (brycehale):

Because it doesn't matter the order, you just need to come up with the ways to make a commitee of 7 from 20 people

OpenStudy (anonymous):

each of different arrangements which cn be done by taking all of the no of things is known as permutation

OpenStudy (brycehale):

So I think it is a combination.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes it i combination

OpenStudy (brycehale):

Thanks for clearing that up!
