OpenStudy (tanya123):

The notion of the American dream figures prominently in this story. How should readers define "American dream"? Moreover, is pursuing the American dream necessarily a good thing, as evidenced by The Great Gatsby?

OpenStudy (tanya123):

@Whitemonsterbunny17

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

So first, what did the story imply or define the "American dream" to be?

OpenStudy (tanya123):

if you work hard enough you can have everything you want

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

Alright, so that would be the answer to the first question. ^.^ Now, for the second one.. What happened within the story to those that pursued the American dream? Did it turn out to be true for them? Were there some negative events that occurred to those individuals?

OpenStudy (tanya123):

I think Nick followed the American Dream, right? but he didnt want anything tho? Gatsby wanted Daisy, but he died

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

I wouldn't know, I haven't read the story. x'D Hmm, would you say that they ended up better off by trying to achieve the American dream?

OpenStudy (tanya123):

lol me neither, I watched the movie question, what is an American Dream?

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

Awe, I'm sorry I couldn't have been more of a help. :s And the American Dream, defined by Google: The ideal that every US citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and initiative. From what I understand of it, though, it's basically working hard in order to get the things that you want, such as a house or car. It can also apply to education and even beauty.

OpenStudy (tanya123):

oh ok, and no actually you were great of a help! I didn't really understand the question until you showed up xD btw in this http://prntscr.com/6qzwzv they didnt achieve what they wanted

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

Awe, well I'm glad I could help! :D Yeah, that makes sense. It can definitely bring out the worst in people.

OpenStudy (tanya123):

xD alright, so can I add this to my answer?

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

Yeah, you can do a lot with what they said. I'd probably write something like this: Pursuing the American dream is not always such a spectacular goal to set. It can change people-for the worse- to become greedy, selfish, and it can ultimately be destructive. The characters in The Great Gatsby found out the hard way that money cannot buy happiness, rather, it can destroy happiness. (Just a draft, but it can give you some ideas.) :p

OpenStudy (tanya123):

Omg thanks! xDD so American Dream doesn't always have to be a good thing

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

Of course! You're welcome! :3 And yes, that's correct! ^.^

OpenStudy (tanya123):

alright thanks a lot xD everything makes sense now :D

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

You're welcome! :D Oh, and don't forget to close the question. xD
