Explain the difference between Vichy(free) France and Occupied France in detail.
" Occupied France was under the direct control of the Germans. They appointed German officials to oversee all aspects of governmental duties, supported by the military. Any infraction of German rules could be treated either by the civilian Nazis running things, or by the military. Vichy France was essentially a puppet government. It was run by French officials, with the Germans maintaining only a small oversight group to make sure that Vichy France did not do anything against the interests of the Germans. The Vichy government generally cooperated with the Germans in rounding up and shipping out Jews and other people the Nazis declared as their enemies. Most Resistance activity was fought in the occupied territories. There was little incentive to take action against the Germans in Vichy France, since it would a) reduce the self governance of the French b) incite severe penalties against the civilian population and c) would not be as effective since there simply was not as many targets of opportunity in Vichy Fanciee. It's also worth noting, that relatively few French really took an active part in the Resistance. Many more did offer passive support, by not reporting Resistance movements, but the vast majority of Frenchmen in both occupied and Vichy France simply avoided doing anything to bring themselves to the attentions of the gestapo or of collaborating Frenchmen. If all the people who claimed to have been in the resistance in June of 1945 had actually been Resistance fighters, there hardly would have been a need for D Day"
