OpenStudy (kj4uts):

Estimator bias occurs when a sample is not random and does not accurately represent the population being studied. True or False?

OpenStudy (kj4uts):

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

I'm not sure. I'm trying to see what I can find in terms of an article or something.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

ok not 100% sure, but this page http://stattrek.com/survey-research/survey-bias.aspx says `"The bias that results from an unrepresentative sample is called selection bias"` so that makes me think that estimator bias is probably bias when it comes to doing another part of the study that isn't sample selection.

OpenStudy (kj4uts):

would that make it true or false?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

I'm not sure, but I would think that estimator bias and selection bias are two different things.

OpenStudy (kj4uts):

This is the definition I was given on my notes I don't know if this helps?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

So that's basically saying that if you use the wrong statistic to estimate a certain parameter, then you will have estimator bias

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Example: using the sample standard deviation to estimate the population mean this is a really extreme example that would not likely happen, but it's still an example of estimator bias
