Can anyone tell me what is the difference between chromosome and chromatid? Like I know that 2 sisters chromatids join together at the centromere to form chromosome. But during meiosis, the sister chromatids being separated by spindle fibers (X --> / and \ ) does that contain the same heredity information as a chromosome (which in the shape like an X)? and if it does, what it means by say diploid cell has 23 chromosomes? Is it like 23 "X" or 23 "/ and \" (sister chromatids.) Thanks a lot :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I meant *haploid* instead of diploid

OpenStudy (amistre64):

| a chromosome, 1 strand, is a chromatid X, during replication, it unzips and forms a copy, they are called sister chromatids | | , once it splits, a replicated copy (a daughter) chromatid is ejected. forming 2 chromosomes

OpenStudy (amistre64):

at least thats what the google is telling me ...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait, so does it mean a chromosome is formed by the joining of 2 chromatids? since we human have 46 chromosomes (which only count the X, not the / and \)??

OpenStudy (amistre64):

http://study.com/academy/lesson/the-genome.html Most multicellular organisms like humans possess more than one chromosome. Humans process 46 chromosomes in most of their cells. The exception to that rule is gametes. Gametes are going to be either egg cells that are produced by females or sperm cells that are produced by males. The gametes only possess half as many chromosomes as most of the rest of our cells do, so they possess 23 chromosomes. The number of chromosomes that a gamete possesses is referred to as the haploid number. So in the case of humans, the haploid number is 23. Haploid is often abbreviated 'n.' What happens now is because we have only 23 chromosomes in gametes, when you have your egg and your sperm, when those two cells fuse, we can reproduce the normal chromosome count of 46. So it takes 46 chromosomes to cook up a human, so to speak.

im no expert at it so thats the best i can offer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks a lot :) I'm just confused and curious to know about that since my bio teacher said that we don't have to know that in detail..but thanksss

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Chromatid is one out of the two similar copies of DNA that makes up a single chromosome,in a pair of chromosomes, there are two chromatids consisting it which are united by a centromere

Thank you yuktha :)
