What is the correct way to rewrite this sentence? Tom opened the box and looked into it only to find it empty. Tom opened the box and looked into it; only to find it empty. Tom opened the box, and looked into it only to find it empty. Tom opened the box and looked into it, only to find it empty. Tom opened the box, and looked into it, only to find it empty.

what do you think?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

B?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nope! :) "Tom opened the box, and looked into it only to find it empty." there shouldn't be a coma before the word and unless you are giving a list

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then my next guess is A :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

XD also incorrect "Tom opened the box and looked into it; only to find it empty." close, but the semi-colon should be a coma. a semi-colon indicates a longer pause than is needed for this sentence

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so its C or D. id have to say C because D has to many pauses right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

remember, no coma before "and" unless you are making a list, such as "apples, bananas, and grapes" even then, some people don't use a coma. "Tom opened the box and looked into it, only to find it empty." < C is correct ^_^

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ah alright i see i didnt know it couldnt be before and. i appreciate the help! ^_^
